Lecture: Medicinal Inorganic Chemistry

The utilization of metals for health and healing dates back thousands of years. The intentional exploration of the structure and properties of specific inorganic complexes for medicinal purposes has significantly advanced in the last 50 years since the discovery of cisplatin. To date, cisplatin and its derivataives are used in more than 50% of chemotherapeutic treatments worldwide, highlighthing the enormous potential of metal-based therapeutics. Within this lecture, the use of metal complexes for medicinal application is critically reviewed based on recent examples in the clinics and the literature.

Current information about the lecture can be found on Moodle.

Lecture Series for Students with Focus in Biomolecular Chemistry: Metals in Medicine: A sucessfull combination?

The vast majority of investigated compounds in modern medicine are based on organic molecules. Within the last decades, the field of medicinial chemistry is shifting towards the application of metal complexes. These compounds offer different mechanisms of action in comparison to organic molecules due to their unique properties, making them novel drug candidates. Within this lecture, the application and beneficial use of metal containing compounds in medicine is highlighted.

Current information about the lecture can be found on Moodle.
